It has been a while since I've seen Greenwood look that helpless on the football field. But No. 4-ranked Monahans can make anyone look that bad.
The Loboes were impressive, especially on defense, as it held the Rangers to 32 yards and one first down in a dominating 42-0 victory in Monahans on Friday night.
Even Greenwood head coach Steve Taylor commented after the game that the Loboes are so good, it's going to be interesting how far they can go in the playoffs. I personally doubt that the 10-0 Loboes will have serious competition coming from West Texas.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, Friday was the last time they would take the field for the 2009 season as Taylor lost the coin flip against Andrews and Seminole for the final playoff spot.
There have been some rumors and conflicting reports going around but Taylor and Andrews coach Jeff Cordell confirmed that the first coin flip, that also included Seminole coach Chris Burtch at the Andrews Administration building, ended in a tie when all three coins came up tails. Because of that, the coaches had to flip again, and this time the coins for Cordell and Burtch came up tails, while Taylor's coin came up heads, knocking Greenwood out. It was that simple and heartbreaking for the Rangers at the same time.
Be sure to catch up my follow-up in my Tuesday column for more of the coaches' reactions.
It's a tough way to end a season, but the Rangers (6-4) knew they had put themselves in a bad position with their loss at Andrews two weeks ago. But give Andrews credit. The Mustangs did what they had to do and Cordell kept his kids believing. Andrews gets back to the playoffs after missing out last year, while Greenwood has its playoff streak end after 10 consecutive years.
It's a tough pill to swallow but it will be a lesson for any high school team that one can't take any game for granted, and that holds true at any level of the sport.
A team just has to take care of business to avoid heads or tails.
