The Greenwood team we all know and love returned on Friday night in a 21-6 victory over Lamesa at J.M. King Memorial Stadium.
The Rangers rushed for 291 yards out of their veer offense and didn't try to get too fancy with their offense. They were led by senior mighty-mite Kyle Young, who rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. For a kid who's just 5-foot-6 and 141 pounds, he sure packs a punch with his hard running and toughness. Young set the tone for the Rangers against the Golden Tornadoes.
Even with the way the Rangers ran the ball down Lamesa's throats, they still squandered some scoring opportunities by either turning the ball over on downs twice and then fumbled the ball inside the Lamesa 5-yard line early in the fourth quarter. It doesn't take a genius to know that they can't leave points on the field next week against No. 5-ranked Monahans, because the Loboes are just plain nasty good even without quarterback Quincy Titus.
Defensively, the Rangers did a decent job of bending but not breaking against the Golden Tornadoes. Lamesa doesn't have a lot of depth but it does have some players who can hurt you if given the opportunity. Lamesa did a solid job of moving the ball in between the 30-yard lines but stalled when it got close to the red zone. The only score Lamesa got came on a long pass play when Greenwood busted coverage.
The Rangers suffered another key injury on Friday when quarterback Trey Edwards left in the second half with a hip pointer and head coach Steve Taylor said he may not play against Monahans next week.
The victory kept Greenwood (6-3, 3-1 in District 3-3A) one game ahead of both Andrews and Seminole, who are both 2-2 in district play. But things could get dicey if Greenwood loses next week and both Andrews and Seminole win. If that happens then there's a three-way tie for the remaining two playoff spots. Forget about Halloween, that could get really scary. Sorry Len.
