Baseball's power hitters took us for quite a ride in the late 1990s and earlier this decade. They amazed with us with superhuman feats, dazzled by passing magical names of the past like Roger Maris and Hank Aaron. They were immortal, right?
No, just juiced up. Our suspicions on one of the biggest stars were confirmed this weekend when Mark McGwire, the Paul Bunyan of the group, let us in on one of the worst secrets in sports. He cheated. He did steroids.
He was sorry ... he got caught. He was convinced steroids affected him, but not his ability to hit homers. He wished he hadn't played in the steroids era. Basically it was a "how to" in apologizing for something which really wasn't wrong and shame on you for blaming McGwire because he was the victim.
McGwire by most accounts will not be elected to the Hall of Fame anytime soon, if at all. That's fine with me. He was "famous" for two things -- hitting homers and the summer of 1998 when he and Sammy Sosa committed one of the great sports frauds on the public. Hope you enjoyed it.
I have provided some columns about this week's news.
Fox Sports's Ken Rosenthal:
McGwire's confession falls short
Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci:
McGwire opens up about steroid admission
Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown:
McGwire's feckless admission is too late.
Denver Post's Woody Paige:
Even baseball's confessed shame shouldn't open Hall of Fame
