When the sports complex project, whose cost including additions is probably now closer to $50 million than $45 million, was being constructed many Midlanders always wondered why didn't they put a track there? A good question. I always thought if you were going to be building out there why not put in a track/soccer facility like you see at Midland Memorial right now. Could the cost have been that much more? Could we have scaled back another facility to make the numbers work?
I just appr

What was all the fuss about? Usually it is the game which doesn't live up to the hype. This year a commercial didn't live up to the hype.
Focus on the Family released an ad "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life." It stars the college football star Tim Tebow and his mother. It was sweat, heart warming, a nice watch, even though I had to go back and watch a couple times to see if I missed something controversial. The controversy, as it turned ou

I can honestly say I have never met a Midlander against downtown revitalization. Maybe someone once wondered what the fuss is about, but really I can't remember people marching down Wall Street calling for the end of downtown revitalization.
Still I have long supported any idea that would create a more vibrant downtown and will continue to back those primarily private sector initiatives.
With downtown on the brain, we provide kudos to the Vision 2020 report which

We read about the Midland Development Corp. wanting to get involved in the financing or "at least the coordination of a Center for Energy Innovation & Commercialization on the north side of town."
And well, we have mixed reviews for what we have seen so far.
Getting involved in energy innovation and research opportunities? We believe is the right path for the MDC and our economic development dollars. Anything to expand our community's expertise in energy. As an editorial in Wednesday's editi…

The Midland Independent School District, according to education reporter Ruth Campbell, is putting together focus groups to discuss the characteristics they would like to see in the next school chief.
According to the school district's Woodrow Bailey, it will be a couple days before the list of Midland citizens asked to participate will be finalized.
According to an earlier story, this group would be a cross-section of opinion-makers, teachers, administrators, parents, people who don't have kids…

I ask this question, not sure of the answer. Some might say he's put a large number of Midlanders on state boards and commissions. That might be true, although a friend pointed out Tom Craddick's influence had a lot to do with that.
So if I ask how has Rick Perry been good for Midland?

We see that ESPN analyst Craig James threatened to sue Texas Tech over Mike Leach's treatment of his son, according to Texas Tech University System attorney's memo.
Here is the link
According to the AP,
In a Wednesday memo to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, Texas Tech University System attorney Ronny Wall says the threat came during a December exchange with Craig J…

OK not really, but what his involvement in much-talked-about advertisement is something I can get behind.
According to the AP, here is the gist of the commercial.
Funded by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, the 30-second ad is expected to recount the story of Pam Tebow’s pregnancy in 1987. After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child. She later gave birth to Tim, who won the 2007 Heisman Tro…

From Bob Campbell's
report in Sunday's edition.
The commissioners court had paid $6.9 million for the business center, then called the Heritage Building, and at most will spend $1.7 million for new furniture, bringing the cost so far to $29.2 million with a contract for materials to be moved from the old courthouse into the new one being the only remaining expense, Smith said.

If you were expecting to see Rick Perry at the top of the list, you are right. Taking in the most recent campaign finance report turned in by Republican candidates, Perry topped Kay Bailey Hutchison ($118,722 to $46,888) in dollars from those identifying themselves as being from Midland.
Those figures do not take into consideration donations less than $250.
Perry scores bigger, More often: The difference between the two can be seen in the larger donations. Hutchison reported 32 donations…

The following originally ran in December. Since Friday was the anniversary of Roe V. Wade we thought it was appropriate.
Dreher: Even a planned parenthood clinic director can see the light
From the pen of Dallas Morning News columnist Rod Dreher, who calls Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director as his Texan of the year.
As director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, and a longtime pro-choice activist, Abby Johnson knew intimately what happens in an abortion. And sh…

While I am not a big fan on a school district's need to hire search firms, if you are going to pay thousands of dollars to do so, you better do it right.
MISD did it right Wednesday night.
As Ruth Campbell reported
here, MISD hired School Executive Consulting of Dallas to find our district's next superintendent. The cost will be $22,000, plus expenses.
As we have written before, Jaso…

This comes to us from Texas on the Potomac, a Houston Chronicle political blog.
It's almost impossible to overstate the political significance of (Tuesday's) Massachusetts Senate election. Here are ten reasons why the election is so important nationally:
1. Massachusetts is one of the most Democratic states in the nation.
2. Health-care reform is at stake.
3. Democrat-only legislative power would come to an end.
4. This is the "Kennedy" seat.
5. This is where the Boston Tea Party took place…

This is supposed to be the time when I go on some kind of a rant about the idea of a
Fort Stockton city councilman calling for a boycott of Midland stores. But I won't.
Truth is nobody wins when threats of boycotts are made. Hope Arthur Orona realizes this.

Our education reporter Ruth Campbell

They include Arrow Educational Services of Marshall and Bob E. Griggs & Associates of Fort Worth. But we are betting the winner will be School Executive Consulting of Dallas, which features former Lubbock and Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Moses.
Moses, some of…

Baseball's power hitters took us for quite a ride in the late 1990s and earlier this decade. They amazed with us with superhuman feats, dazzled by passing magical names of the past like Roger Maris and Hank Aaron. They were immortal, right?
No, just juiced up. Our suspicions on one of the biggest stars were confirmed this weekend when Mark McGwire, the Paul Bunyan of the group, let us in on one of the worst secrets in sports. He cheated. He did steroids.
He was sorry ... he got caught. He was co…

The most powerful name in cable news has added one of the more powerful politicians in America to its lineup, and this should be a match made in right-wing heaven.
Fox News gets Palin and her legion of fans. She will mean ratings, ratings and more ratings. What's not to like there?
Palin, she adds another media source to push what she's trying to sell to potential Republican primary voters. Mike Huckabee has reaped the benefits of doing so with his weekend show. Palin also stays relevant as a ma…
