Newsroom Stew Alcohol in Andrews? No one is going to decide it for them

Appears there will be another fight to allow for alcohol sales in Andrews. I think it is facinating that the citizens in Andrews, citing best interest of the community, have been able to win this battle as long as they have. I expect a referendum this year or next will be defeated again. Say what you want about the issue, but it is being solved at the community level.

Here is the story

Trish Powell 5 Great Reasons to Return the 2010 Census Form

Did you receive the 2010 Census Form last week? Have you completed it? If not, I strongly urge you to take care of that ASAP! I did.

Every ten years, the US federal government is required to count every man, woman and child in the country. Not surprisingly, the census is a massive undertaking requiring the work of more than a million people to accurately count the hundreds of millions of people living in the country. Contrary to the myths, participation in the census is extremely safe… Continue

Newsroom Stew Sarah Palin is coming to Midland

Here is the link.

Kudos to KWEL for having information on this story early in the day. We have confirmed it with people from the Liberty and Freedom Foundation and local Republicans.
The event is meant to raise money for the foundation, which will then spend money in districts where they believe their candidates can pull off victories in November.
Yes, the tickets are expensive, b… Continue

Newsroom Stew Woods at the Masters? Oh yeah. It's as good as sports will get ....

... unless he misses the cut.

AP: Woods to return to golf at the Masters

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods said Tuesday he will return to golf next month at the Masters, ending a four-month hiatus brought on by a sex scandal that shattered his image as the gold standard in sports.
“The Masters is where I won my first major and I view tContinue

Newsroom Stew Hearst: Armey blasts Republicans on immigration, saying GOP is alienating Latino voters

Here is the Chronicle story.

First of all, I expect some tea partiers to call for Armey to turn in his party card. We will see.

Second, he makes valid points.

"Republicans have to get this right and get off this goofiness," Armey said. "Ronald Reagan said 'tear down this wall.' Tom Tancredo said 'build this wall.' Which is right?" ...

Armey said

Mama Dinka An 80-year-old-Bike?

Recently, I had some time to ride with a girlfriend over to Big Spring, Texas.

This quaint little town is built, as most of us West Texans know, around what apparently use to be a 'spring', and it sits at the base of one of two caprock elevations in West Texas. (Believe me, in a land of 'no mountains', West Texans know that too!)

To my pleasant surprise, what use to be a sleepy little town (or so I thought), is a rare gem of bustling activity. The city fathers must have bo… Continue

The Sports Blog Former Chaps coach excited about D-2 tourney

Former Midland College men's basketball coach Grant McCasland can't help but be happy with his current situation at Midwestern State. The 28-2 Mustangs have their best record in school history and they're also enjoying the highest ranking in school history at No. 3
At 6 p.m. Saturday, the Mustangs begin play in the NCAA Division II Tournament when they host the South Central Regional and play against Incarnate Word (23-6). The regional runs through Tuesday.
"It's been great," said McCasl… Continue

Roy State Board of education member walks out.

In todays paper there was an article about the state board member who walked out of the meeting because the republican members did not want to include 2 hispanic medal of honor winners, and one black on the state books. Their reasoning was that it would somehow diminish, tarnish, or somehow berate other war heroes. Sounds like a pretty lame excuse to me. Continue

Newsroom Stew If I were running Trace, I'd give the MDC its money back

Of course I'm not and there are a lot of investors glad that is the case.
However, if Trace is not living up to its part of an economic deal, the taxpayers should not be required to make up the difference or cut the group slack. They took the money (MDC and state) and when they did, they have to be expected to live up to the guidelines set. Filling 25 of 114 doesn't cut it and the MDC should make sure the public understands that.
Councilman John James was right to say he was uncomfo

Theodore Evander Baylor is Back

When Baylor defeated Texas over the weekend, the Bears completed their most successful basketball season in more than 60 years. I remember. I was there. In 1948, Baylor became the first Southwest Conference team to play in the NCAA tournament finals. Unfortunately, Adolph Rupp’s Kentucky Wildcats, led by All-America’s Ralph Beard and Alex Groza, was the opponent. Kentucky treated Baylor like it had everybody else, 58-42. In those days, the NCAA was an elite tournament, no bubble teams or non cha… Continue
