It's been along time since I've thought about all of those places that you mentioned. Some great memories from long ago. It's too bad that we can't just blend that new stuff right in the with the old to keep those great memories alive. We use…
I'm one & the same. Good to hear from you! I spent 35 years w/ MISD & retired right after my son died. But I haven't gone away. I've done a number of odd jobs to stay busy, including a 2 1/2 year stint at NewsWest 9 in the news department--not on camera(I'm too old for that!). Now, I clean rental houses for a realtor, work at a storage facility & work for CPS as a monitor for court-ordered parent/child visits. It keeps me busy & pays the bills. It's tough to live on retirement pay. What are you doing these days? I hope I treated you kindly & was patient with you at Goddard.
Thanks Tommy! I'm in the middle of the great Texas Tech game...There's nothin' like Texas FOOTBALL!
Now, on to the blog....I didn't know if it would come through or not, but I'll pass along to the administrator...I was afraid this would happen....
He told me they will be putting my blog up on 'Lifestyles' later this month, so I guess being on the back page, is better than no page at all!
Have a great start to a New Year...we'll talk soon!
Aw, thanks Tommy! I usually write for myself, and end up writing stuff that tends to push old memory buttons for people. ( Which for me, is great!) I'm glad I'm able to remember and relay what stuff we had back in the 'old days'. I would like to think people would want to know what life was like in M-town, 'back in the day'!
You are real sweet to post a compliment - thanks!
And this may blow yours! It may have been my brother who came to your door selling Spudnuts. He worked for them one summer selling Spudnuts. I used to take him down to the Spudnut Shop and they would give him a metal basket with white paper bags full of Spudnuts. Then deliver him to a neighborhood to sell them. They were very delicious.
And speaking of Cabells. Yes, I went there often for a very good reason. My Dad worked for the Texas Dept of Public Safety and in Abilene he was the Drivers License Examiner. At that time you could get your drivers license at age 14. So, my dad gave me my exam before leaving Abilene and I got my license. However, my dad was very conservative and did not let me drive much by myself. But Cabells was close and I didn't have to get on a major street, so I was pretty much free to drive there whenever I wanted. I took advantage of that and went to Cabells real often. I thought I was hot stuff because most of the people I went to school with didn't drive yet.
Tommy, thanks for answering. Sounds like we were neighbors. Yes, I do remember the blast at the Western Company warehouse. I was at home alone and thought the whole town had blown up. I believe I remember that no one was seriously injured. That was a miracle.
I graduated from Midland High School in 1961. The next fall Lee High School opened. My brother, Eddie Dunn, graduated in 1966 from Lee. He was friends with the Casbeer brothers and probably knew the other guys you mentioned.
I worked at the M System Food store at what later became the Dellwood shopping mall, went to church at Dellwood Baptist across Midkiff and got my haircut at the barbershop just across Illinois street. A good part of my life seemed to revoIve around that intersection. I probably sold your family some groceries. I worked at M System about 4 years from the time it opened until I graduated.
Thanks again for replying and best wishes for your future.
Hey Tommy!
Thanks for checking in....I've been really busy lately...trying to stay on top of things.
Just got back from a 'girls weekend getaway' that was inspired from the reunion this summer....Can you imagine 15 women going to the Texas Hill Country for a Texas Wine and Music Festival??? With Joe Ely and Asleep at the Wheel playing (along with today's Joe Ely - Mr. Pat Green), it was like old times at the Cotton Club in Lubbock! ! Well, almost....:)Pretty fun, but too much rain and too much wine....we were soaked in more ways than one!
Hope all is well with you....I'll try to be a bit more current on here. I've been setting up another blog site on Google's Blogger that is more of my business....hoping to get it off the ground and go 'Nationwide!"
Talk more soon....enjoy those fall colors for us in West Texas!
hey Tommy - just got back on the computer after 10 days without it! Boy , there IS life without technology after all!
The reunion was better than I imagined...so many people from all points around the world, made the effort, and that alone was tremendous!
We had fun just laughing and talking over old times...seems like noone cared much about anything but just being there. And several who had planned to stay only one night, ended up staying for both nights! It was a sure reason to get together...we all seemed to miss those 'good ole days'!
Hope you are staying cool....I just returned from Ruidoso New Mexico where it was around 60 duriing the night with showers! A nice change from 105 in West Texas!
Take care, and we'll chat more,
