"Your Home on the Range"

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going... to "The Gage"!

Just about everyone in West Texas is familiar with the historic hotel in Marathon, Texas.
If you aren't, it's about time you paid a visit to see what was created in another time and place. Deep in the bowels of West Texas, next to the edge of a famous state park and almost as close to Mexico, is The Gage Hotel.

Built in 1927, the hotel was commissioned by Alfred Gage, a Vermont native t

On the Wings of a Prayer...

Today marks the anniversary of my oldest daughter's death. I share this not to stir raw emotion of the reader, but because it's important to this story. She died the day after the Martin Luther King holiday eleven years ago, on January 20th. Since her passing, each day without her has turned into another week, or month or year. Now, we begin a new decade. A new decade of remembering and reflection.

We live close to the former football stadium, Memorial Stadium, in old Midland. It has become the… Continue

Once in a Blue Moon....

Every so often we are in the right place at the right time. Unexpected surprises are the best, and when they come blowing in like a mighty West Texas wind, then you better hold on, 'cause it's gonna be good!

Such was the case Saturday night, when a new band blew into Midland.
Not just any old band. This was SERYN.

'Seryn' was formed only 8 months ago at North Texas State, in Denton, and has already picked up speed, catching the attention of Dallas, Nashville, Austin and now Midland. The… Continue

Hi Cindi

What's goin' on in the Tall City these days? Just thought I'd check in to see how you and yours are doing. The snow here is finally melting after over 30 inches in February. I'm defintiely ready for the warm weather do get here.
Hope all is well with you.

Talk at ya'll later. Have a good weekend.

Hey Cindi

Congratulations on your 30th anniversary. That's an impressive milestone in these times. Sounds like ya'll had a great time and got to visit a very historic and interesting place.
We are trying to dig out of about a foot of snow with 3 to 4 foot drifts, seems like I've been trying to plow thru them all weekend. And get this, we may have another 8 inches by Wed. I think it's about time to head south. :) Looks like ya'll have had a bit of nasty weather this winter also.

Watchin' the Super Bowl, looks like the game could get interesting here in the last few minutes. Don't really have a favorite in the game, so whoever wins is OK with me. It's been a pretty good game so far.

Anyway just wanted to say Hi. Looks like the Saints are gonna pull it out.

Watched the Sooners finally win a bowl game. I'm a big OU fan, have been since the Midland days.

I'll be pullin' for the Horns later this week.

this old man doesn't have any idea where this will be posted. But in response to a reply to my early post, I say thanks for Mama Dinka. That said, how many folks out there remember when there was no loop? How many remember the Star Dust Honky Tonk in Odessa? That was where I met my wife.

Good job. That would really be interesting to see what kind of response it would get. I think it would get quite a few hits. I'm surprised thatyou hadn't known about the accident. Of course, I don't really remember hearing anything about in the years that I lived there either.
Hey, sounds like your weekend was a bunch of fun. I really enjoy listening to Asleep at the Wheel, they have some great music. I got to hear them at a fair in Euless back in the 90s. It was great and I even got to meet Ray Benson. Nice guy and really tall.

Let's hope the story works out.

Talk at ya later.

Just a quick note to say Hi. You must be stayin' busy, I haven't heard much from you lately. Hope all is going well for you. Glad to see football season is well underway, I try to listen to the Rebels on Friday nights, looks like they are playing some close games, just not quite there yet and it looks like they have a tough schedule the rest of the way.
The fall colors are beginning to pop out up here, looks like we are gonna have some pretty awesome color this fall.

Have a good one and we'll talk at ya'll later.

Hey Cindi

I just listened to the LHS-MHS game. What a game, how exciting does it get. After last week I was a little worried but the boys came thru with flying colors tonite. Let's hope that gets the boys in maroon on a roll for the rest of the season. GO REBELS!!!!

How are ya doin'? We've had some great weather this week, But that's gonna change as we're headin' south in the morning for Big D. We'll be there all week visiting with the kids and spoiling the grandkids.

Just wanted to say HI and let ya know I'm listening to some great West Texas again up here in Ohio.

Have a great weekend and we'll holler at ya'll later

Hey Cindi

Sounds like everyone had a great time. Glad to hear it.

Ahhh Ruidoso, I remember it well, seemed like we used to get over there about every other year or so. I bet it was a great relief from those 100 degree days in Midland. We always had an awesome time when we went. Going to the horse races and even going on a trail ride, it was great. The drive up to Sierra Blanca was also interesting. I remember the road up to the top was narrow and winding. My mom was freaking out all the way up, telling my dad he was getting to close to edge. It was worth it though, it was awesome once you got up there.
Everytime we chat you bring back some great memories that I hadn't thought of in many many years. Great stuff!!!

Try to stay cool and we'll holler at ya'll later.

Hey Cindi
I'm a little tardy on inquiring as to how everything went with the reunion. I read your article on attending your reunion, good stuff as usual.
Hope the festivities went well and everyone was able to reconnect with old friends. My 40th will be coming up in 2011 and I am looking forward to coming back and seeing the old homestead again and visiting with everyone.
I'm sure that you have everything under control there in West Texas, we are enjoying some nice weather here lately. We're trying to get our plans together to get down that way to visit the kids and grandkids, probably sometime this fall.
Just wanted to drop a note to say HI and hope ya'll are having a good summer.

Hi Mama-Dinka,
I just opened up my own business here in Midland last week & am now trying to get the word out! I have noticed that you are head of Midland and Lee High's 35th High School Class Reunion's and thought that some of the attendee's might be interested in some of my service's. I was wondering if you would give me some advice as to getting in touch with them about my services and the discounts I am currently offering? Thank You!!!
